(MITCHELL) - The City of Mitchell purchased three automated external defibrillators.
Each machine costs $1,699 and were purchased from Zee Medical and Market Force. Funds from the Local Option Income Tax, geared for public safety, was used to purchase the equipment.
The Times-Mail reports that a representative from the company says that a prescription is required for each machine, and those would be given to the city for free. A set of batteries and pads come with each machine, and cases would also be provided at no cost to the city. The city also purchased an extra set of pads ($200) and a training module at a cost of $400 to train all city employees on how to use the AED. Pads need to be replaced for each patient.
Mitchel Board of Works member Terry Slone requested that the city look into possibly getting grant money to purchase three more ADEs for the city. If no grant funds are available Slone suggested the city purchase three more at its March 31 meeting.
When all the machines are purchased, they will be kept in police cars, fire trucks, at City Hall and at the city pool during the summer months.
Currently police, firefighters and city employees have to wait for an ambulance to arrive if there is a cardiac emergency.
John McGaughey of Zee Medical says CPR is great, but with an AED the chance of survival increased by 95 percent.
