(BLOOMINGTON) - It’s in the headlines nearly every day: a child experiencing some sort of trauma.
Whether it be violence, abuse, a car crash or bullying, trauma can change young lives forever. National estimates show as many as seven in ten children ages 14-17 has witnessed family or community violence.
Children who have experienced life-altering violence need impactful intervention to maintain a course of healthy development. Many times, intervention may come from a youth worker, mentor or other caring adult in a child's life. That's why the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is hosting a workshop to help prepare those adults to use a proactive approach to prevention and move away from reactive approaches to violence.
Cierra Olivia Thomas-Williams, a prevention specialist with the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, will help participants identify effective prevention practices and learn how to coordinate resources for families.
The forum will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday at The Warehouse, 1525 S. Rogers St., Bloomington, 47403.
As part of IYI's Youth Worker Cafe program, the forum and lunch are free, but reservations are required. Please RSVP by noon on Wednesday at www.iyi.org/YWC or by contacting IYI Statewide Outreach Manager Debbie Jones at djones@iyi.org.
Youth Worker Cafes are designed to bring together local youth workers to build relationships and inspire collaborations that will benefit children. This Youth Worker Café is sponsored by the Monroe County Asset Building Coalition and supported by collaborative efforts of IYI.
For more information on the Youth Worker Cafe, contact IYI Central Indiana Outreach Manager Lela Smith at lsmith@iyi.org.
