(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Police are urging Indiana University student to think about securing their belongings if they are leaving campus on Spring Break.
Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters says historically burglaries and thefts from vehicles increase during that time.
The goal is to raise awareness and limit crime.
The crime rate decreased by 48 percent over the winter break. Qualters credits that to raised awareness through the media, social media and student apartment management.
Bloomington Police and Indiana University police will be doing "targeted patrols" around student apartment complexes and neighborhoods near campus during Spring Break.
Police say to prevent a break-in students should lock their doors and windows, not post about vacation plans on social media and ask a friend to watch over your residents if you are planning on leaving town.
