(BEDFORD) - North Lawrence Community School students in third through eighth grades will begin taking the ISTEP test today.
Testing must be completed by March 11.
Testing mandates and procedures have posed problems for state and local educators. A major complaint was the test was too long. Gov. Mike signed a law reducing the time which was scheduled to double this year and take 12.5 hours to complete. The new law shortened the test by three hours.
The test will also be shaved by another hour after the legislation left the social studies portion for fifth and seventh graders optional.
Another complication during this year's practice runs was the many glitches in the testing system. North Lawrence students experienced a couple of those glitches.
Indiana Department of Education spokesman Daniel Altman told the Associated Press the Feb. 13 statewide test run had gone better than the initial practice in January and the glitches were addressed and should not be a problem in the April and May online portion of the testing.
