Terry Sorrells Joins Lawrence County Veterans Affairs Office

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners were introduced to the Veteran Affairs Office new employee Terry Sorrells Tuesday morning.

Sorrells, a Vietnam veteran, will be working part-time helping veterans file claims. He is replacing Bill Baker who retired earlier this year.

Sorrells is a retired military police officer and served as a Lawrence County commander and detective in the 1970s. He served 10 years with the department.

"His special expertise in developing a case for the police department and prosecutors will help when developing a case for a veteran to receive their benefits," said Lawrence County Veteran Affairs Director Brad Bough.

Sorrells also updated the commissioners on the Welcome Home event scheduled for May 9th for Lawrence County Vietnam veterans.

The guest speaker will be First Sergeant Michael Conley, who served more than 42 years in the U.S. Army. He is also a Huron native.

"Conley is probably the most decorated Vietnam veteran in Lawrence County, earning two bronze and two silver stars and a purple heart," Sorrells says. "He also was in the U.S. Army Special Forces and a Mountain Ranger and was inducted into the Mountain Ranger Hall of Fame."

Bough told the commissioners that he is passing around a petition to have a earn support to establish a veteran's patient clinic in Lawrence County. Baugh is partnering with the Lawrence County Veterans Group to submit signed petitions to federal representatives for the request and will be visiting several veteran groups and agencies to rally support.
Sheriff Mike Branham reported that there were 111 inmates in the jail, of those 17 were female and there were no Department of Correction inmates at the facility.
Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer presented a grant of $15,694.50 to reimburse the county half of her salary. She also reported that she will be attending and is helping to organize a mass casualty exercise in Brown County on Wednesday. Representatives from seven surrounding counties will be involved in the event. Luchauer also warned residents about possible flooding in the area due to the large amount of snow melting and the forecast for rain. Residents might see some flooding in some of the county low places. She noted that drivers need to use caution.
The commissioners approved to have the Williams Covered Bridge re-certified on March 10th as a historic bridge.
The commissioners approved to spend $5,000 on the inspection of the court's elevators for Homeland Security. By law the elevators are inspected every year at the state level and then every 5 years by Homeland Security./li>
