Two Jackson County Women Arrested After Stealing Mail

Last updated on Thursday, March 12, 2015

(SEYMOUR) - An investigation into reports of people tampering with mailboxes in Jackson County in January led to the arrest Friday of a woman and her daughter at a motel on Seymour’s east side.

Columbus resident 28-year-old Amber D. Morgan and her mother, 53-year-old Barbara J. Duncan, are also involved in thefts from mailboxes across the state during the past five months.

Jackson County Sheriff Michael Carothers says investigators believe Morgan and Duncan were driving up to mailboxes and taking credit cards, debit cards, checks, driver's licenses and other mail in Jackson County and anywhere from 12 to 14 other counties since October.

"The mail that is inside the bags is bank letters, credit cards and just a fraction of the evidence detectives seized," says Carothers. "We found mail from Winamac to Evansville."

Police received numerous complaints of someone stealing mail. One resident was able to describe a car, which police later spotted stuck in the mud and abandoned. Inside, they found a motel receipt that led them to the two women.

At the motel, police found a laptop with information from the mail used to attempt to break into bank accounts.

"They were out targeting families to obtain IDs and more credit cards," Carothers added. "They had some credit cards in other names and were making purchases off them."

The sheriff also found evidence that his own brother's mail had been stolen.

As investigators go through the mail in Jackson County, they will identify victims and notify their local police departments.
