(FRENCH LICK) - March is Disability Awareness Month, and the Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living, Rehabilitation Hospital, and the Springs Valley Optimist Club will bring wheelchair basketball to Orange County.
The exhibition game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, and the event is free and open to the public. However, donation buckets will be passed around during the game. The game will take place at the Springs Valley school physical education complex. Donations collected will be used for travel expenses for the RHI team and the SICIL fund towards building handicap-accessible ramps.
The RHI is a nonprofit organization that assists those with physical disabilities. The goal of the RHISP is to provide athletics for those with disabilities to promote physical fitness and increase their quality of life. They also look to introduce different wheelchair sports, and for some of their participants to perform at the competitive level.
The RHISP serves youth and adults with spinal cord, orthopedic, neuromuscular, and visual impairments. They specialize in developing equipment for their patients to use in various athletic activities.
The Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living is also a nonprofit that advocates for disability patients in all stages of life. SICIL serves many counties in the surrounding area. They have a website as well a phone number for anyone who would need their services.
The Springs Valley Optimist Club is sponsoring the event Saturday as a service project. They are committed to the youth of the area, and invite any adults who are invested in the area's youth to join the club.
