(CHAPEL HILL) - A 4-year-old boy has died after he was found in a pond in a wooded area at the Monroe/Lawrence county line.
Missy Hayden Bernard reported her son Nathan missing to the Lawrence County Police Department at 5:15 p.m.
Bernard told police Nathan had ran out of the house, in the 9900 block of Chapel Hill Road, chasing the dogs into the woods.
She told police she yelled and searched the area for about 10 to 15 minutes before calling 911.
Lawrence County police immediately contacted Monroe County authorities who, along with Indiana State Police troopers, Department of Natural Resource officers and local firefighters, began searching for the boy.
Nathan's boots were found at the edge of the pond just before 7 p.m. Monroe County Deputy Jeff Feiner, who is a member of the dive team, jumped into the pond and found the boy.
According to police, rescue workers began CPR and the child was rushed by ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital where an emergency room doctor pronounced Nathan dead at 7:38 p.m.
