(COLUMBUS) - A Bloomington man was arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle Monday night and leading Columbus Police on a chase.
According to Columbus Police Sgt. Matt Harris, officers were called to the 1600 block of Central Avenue at 6:23 p.m. about the theft of a vehicle.
The owner told police the vehicle was stolen while parked at a gas station.
A short time later an officer spotted the stolen car being driven erratically at the intersection of 11th and Washington streets.
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle and that is when the driver sped away on Indianapolis Road and then west on Tellman Road.
At the end of Tellman Road the vehicle slid into several trees and went through a fence near Interstate 65. The stolen car then went airborne and crashed near the interstate.
Police arrested 29-year-old Jonathan Reichel. He was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital to be treated for minor injuries and then was booked into the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of felony auto theft, reckless driving, resisting law enforcement by fleeing and misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement and criminal recklessness.
