(BEDFORD) - A fire destroyed the home of Clipp Crosby at 101 Brookside Drive on Tuesday night.
According to Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner, firefighters were notified about the blaze at 10:34 p.m.
"The family was not living in the home," Wagner added. "They have been remodeling the home and only had a few items in the home at the time of the fire."
A passing motorist noticed the fire and contacted the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department. Shortly thereafter firefighters arrived with three engines and the rescue truck and observed fire shooting out of the roof.
"The home had a huge attic area and the fire had filled that space and already had burnt through, venting the roof," Wagner says. "It was a bad situation."
Adding to the blaze was the lack of water pressure in the area.
"Most of those hydrants are between 60 to 70 years old and only pump out about 500 gallons of water a minute," Wagner says. "That sounds like a lot, but it's not. Most of the hydrants in the city will push out about 975 or 1,200 or more gallons a minute."
Firefighters were able to save some items that were in the home, but everything else was destroyed.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Wagner believes it was caused by an electrical issue.
"Right now it is undetermined," Wagner added. "Investigator Brent Allen will be back on the scene this morning looking things over. But it is a dangerous situation. To really get in there to determine the cause we would have to move in some heavy equipment most of the stone walls are very unstable and I don't want to risk the lives of any of my men. Hopefully Brent will be able to make a determination sometime this afternoon or tomorrow."
A Seals ambulance crew was on the scene and Tabernacle of Praise Emergency Service was called to the scene at 1:20 a.m. to provide drinks and food for the firefighters who had been battling the blaze all night.
Firefighters left the scene at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.
