(BEDFORD) - The Playhouse Auction and Spring Fling at the Lawrence County Boys & Girls Club was a huge success, according to board president Angie Lewis.
"The large crowd was treated to a cookout of hamburgers and hot dogs prepared by Henry Hill and Ryan Griffith and auctioneer Steve Warren enticed every bidder to reach deep into their pockets and the result was amazing," she added. "Money is still coming in but the Playhouse auction looks to have easily beat last year's total of $41,000."
Chief Professional Officer, Kyle Brown, informed the crowd of the continued growth of the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County, since its formation a little over 2 years ago.
He was pleased to announce that with the newly renovated teen center, located at the Thornton building, the club is now hosting over 350 children, at all locations, in its after school programs.
Brown emphasized the clubs strong relationship with NLCS and the clubs goal of increasing graduation rates at Lawrence County schools. Noting the statistic, that a high school graduate will earn more than $200,000 over his/her lifetime than a high school drop out.
He also emphasized the need for continued support from all of the community and detailed the current $1.93 a week campaign that has just started. He explained that for just $1,93 a week (less than a cup of coffee), a person could contribute $100 a year and if 1000 people did that, it would bring $100,000 to the club.
The auction itself was entertaining with the beautiful gazebo built by Lineal Contracting going for $4,000.
A playset donated by the local running community brought $3,600 as did the dream playhouse built by Tri County Builders.
Twelve playsets were also purchased for $2,500 each by various community leaders and one lucky child from each elementary school in the county will take one home.
Garden sheds built by Gary Sanders, Lineal Contracting and North Lawrence Career Center brought an average of $2,000 each.
An IU doghouse and a Kentucky doghouse (transformed into a Colt doghouse) were purchased by Bedford Ford and will be raffled off at their store. The proceeds of that raffle will go to the Ugly Duck Derby on May 22.
"Bedford Ford along with Pam and Dale McIntrye will sponsor the grand prize for the Ugly Duck Derby, a 2015 Ford Focus 2 year lease," Lewis added.
Lewis commended all present for their continued support, especially event chairman Ryan Sullivan and committee members Doug and Debbie Kellams, and Brittany McClain.
