(SULLIVAN) - A Sullivan man was arrested Wednesday night after fleeing from police in a vehicle.
An Indiana State trooper spotted a tan 2000 Mercury traveling north on West Street in Sullivan and recognized the driver 38-year-old Joseph Smith of Sullivan.
Smith did not have a valid driver's license.
The trooper attempted to stop Smith. Smith refused to stop and fled westbound on Wolfe Street, across U.S. 41 and continued west to County Road 325 West. Smith then turned south fleeing from the officer on various county roads.
The pursuit lasted about 15 minutes and reached speeds of more than 80 miles per hour, until Smith finally stopped in the driveway of his mother's home in the 2600 block of South Round Road 350 West.
Smith, who appeared to be intoxicated, refused to submit to a blood-alcohol test. He was arrested on various charges including operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction, criminal recklessness and resisting law enforcement. He was taken to the Sullivan County Jail where he is being held on a $32,000 bond.
