(BLOOMINGTON) - Two bridge beams for Interstate 69 construction that fell from semis in two accidents were damaged and will have to be replaced.
The large, concrete beams were being delivered to sites in Section 4 of I-69, the 27-mile stretch of highway from Naval Surface Activity Crane in Greene County.
According to Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Will Wingfield, the first accident was April 16 on the I-69 construction site when a truck carrying a 150-foot long concrete beam was attempting to cross a temporary haul road to cross the median to get to the other side of the construction zone when the truck got into the loose soil causing it to turn over.
According to a Morgan County police report the second accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. April 23 on Ind. 37 just north of Martinsville and was caused by a steering malfunction on the rear trailer. The concrete beam, which weighed more than 100,000 pounds, went off the side of the road and into a ditch. No other vehicles were involved and no one was injured in the accident. The southbound Ind. 37 near Ennis Road was partially blocked for about seven hours.
Wingfield says both beams were damaged and will have to be replaced. Winfield says one beam was delivered Tuesday and the other is currently being produced.
