(DUBOIS CO.) - A Huntingburg man was seriously injured after he crashed his ATV early Sunday morning.
30-year-old Lukas Schroeder was operating an ATV in a wooded area along the Patoka River when he failed to negotiate the trail he was riding and hit a tree head on.
A passenger called a family member for help.
Schroeder, who suffered leg and head injuries, was taken to Memorial Hospital in Jasper and later transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville where he remains in critical but stable condition.
Schroeder was not wearing a helmet and alcohol may have been a contributing factor. The accident is still under investigation.
Responding agencies included the Dubois County Sheriff's Department and Indiana Conservation Officers.
Conservation Officers strongly encourage the use of protective equipment when operating an ATV such as a chest protector, helmet and shin guards.
