(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indiana University police officer has resigned following allegations that he allegedly raped a student.
According to Bloomington Police Capt. Joseph Quarters, the incident allegedly happened in the 1800 block of East 10th Street at a campus residence hall during the early morning hours of April 24.
The officer is accused of raping a 25-year-old student. The woman told investigators the officer came to her room without being invited while she was visiting with another woman. Police say both women had been drinking.
Quarters says at some point after 2 a.m. the officer and the woman ended up in the woman's bed.
Later that day, just before 2 p.m., the woman went to IU Health Hospital and reported being raped.
University police were called to the hospital, but when they learned that one of their officers was accused of the rape, they contacted Bloomington Police Department to investigate.
As soon as police and IU officials learned of the incident, the officer was suspended without pay pending an investigation. The Monroe County Prosecutor's Office says no charges will be filed, but are not saying why. The officer turned in his resignation Monday.
