(MITCHELL) - Renee Childress will be the new principal at Hatfield Elementary School.
Childress will replace Rex Meyer who is retiring. She will begin her duties on July 1.
Assistant Superintendent Phil Storm says more than 30 individuals applied for the position.
After three weeks of interviews, the school board conducted its final interviews Monday before choosing Childress.
Childress has served as a special education teacher at Petersburg Elementary School since 2001. She has a bachelor's degree in elementary education, with a kindergarten endorsement from the University of Southern Indiana. She also has a special education certification from Indiana University-Southeast and a master's degree in elementary reading and math from Walden University in Baltimore. She obtained her license to serve as a building principal this month from Oakland City University.
Childress was also named 2013 Pike County Teacher of the Year.
