(SALEM) - The West Washington school board decided in a special meeting not to renew the contract of girls varsity basketball Head Coach Wade Tomlinson.
After Athletic Director Phillip Bowsman recommended that the board renew the contract, board member Matthew Deaton made a motion to do so, which was seconded by Brian Farmer. However, the other five board members --Tim Barksdale, William VanCleave, Jim Hughes, Joe Walker and Doug Brown--voted against the motion.
According to the Salem Democrat, who interviewed Tomlinson. He was never given a reason why his contract was not renewed. But he did say some people were upset about some of the players getting to play.
Tomlinson says he wasn't aware that the decision had even been made until after the meeting when a few board members called him to apologize.
Tomlinson says he has never received a bad evaluation and was not given a chance to correct any problems, because none were brought to his attention. He believes he was let go because of politics.
During Tomlinson's tenure West Washington narrowly missed winning two sectional championships, losing in buzzer-beaters in both 2013 and 2014. Last year the Lady Senators went 4-18 on the season. Thomlinson says he did the best he could with a young inexperienced team after losing six seniors.
Tori Packwood, who was a standout for Tomlinson early in his tenure with the Senators said she was disappointed she and many others weren't given a chance to voice their support.
