(BLOOMINGTON) - Steve Thrasher, a long-time favorite WFHB radio personality, died early Friday after injuries sustained in a surfing accident in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was 62. Indiana University Provost Lauren Robel, Thrasher’s wife, was by his side.
Robel posted to her husband's Facebook account that Thrasher had severely injured his spine while surfing last Saturday, April 25, in waters he had visited "hundreds of times," at his favorite beach.
"Steve was completely lucid and clear-eyed about what would happen next, and he decided that only one path would be consistent with his sense of dignity," she wrote. "We removed life support, and he said goodbye to our children and his sisters, and passed away in my arms a day later."
Thrasher, also known by his radio handle, "the Old Professor," hosted the popular radio show "Dark End of the Street" with on-air partner "Vicious Gus," aka Bill Weaver. The duo took the airwaves every Saturday afternoon since January 1993, according to WFHB music director Jim Manion. Thrasher had been involved with WFHB since 1978, when the station-to-be was organizing its first fundraising attempts as Bloomington Community Radio.
IU President Michael McRobbie has appointed John Applegate, IU's executive vice president university academic affairs, as acting provost of the Bloomington campus in Robel's absence.
