(FERDINAND) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an ATV accident that occurred around 11 a.m. Thursday morning on Mariah Hill Road near Ferdinand.
Officers say 15-year-old Kendra Steckler of Ferdinand was found by a family member lying in the roadway with the ATV she was driving on its side.
Steckler was taken to the Ferdinand Fire Department by a family member and then transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital for head trauma.
She was then flown to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY. by St. Mary's Life Flight for further treatment.
Steckler was not wearing any protective equipment such as a helmet and the cause of the accident is unknown and still under investigation.
Responding agencies included the Ferdinand Fire Department, Ferdinand Police Department, Memorial EMS, Dubois County Dispatch, St. Mary's Life Flight and Indiana Conservation Officers.
Conservation Officers Strongly encourage the use of protective equipment while riding ATVs such as helmets, riding boots, gloves, and shin guards.
