(BEDFORD) - The aroma of BBQ will filled the air around the Lawrence County courthouse square during the Sixth Annual BBQ at the Quarry Friday and Saturday.
Competitors can prepare meat in four categories: ribs, pulled pork, chicken and brisket. And there is an new entry - the best BBQ sauce.
Currently there are around 10 teams competing.
In each category chefs can win $250 for first place, $150 for second and $100 for third. The grand champion, who must compete in all four meat categories, will receive $1,000 with reserve champion taking home $750.
Vendors will be selling food along J Street beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday.
A limestone carving exhibition and walking tour of downtown will begin at 5 p.m.
Opening night musical performances are Crust, Gran Torino and Summertime Band.
The Harps Commons beer garden will open at 6 p.m. and remain open until 11:45 p.m.
On Saturday, the Bedford Farmers' Market opens at 8 a.m. and limestone carving starts at 9 a.m.
Food vendors reopen at 11 a.m., and judging for the cooking contest will kick off at 1:30 p.m.
Public sampling of the barbecue begins at 4 p.m. and the announcement of winners is set for 5:30 p.m. The beer garden reopens at 6 p.m. with Zeke's Bones, Reese Tanner and 100 Proof providing the musical entertainment Saturday night.
Proceeds from the event help pay for the Freedom Festival fireworks display.
