(ORANGE CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers recovered the body of a Martin County teen from Patoka Lake early Friday morning.
The body of 17-year-old Kevin Phillips of Shoals was pulled to the surface just after 12:30 a.m. when a conservation officer diver located him near the Jackson Boat Ramp dock.
Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Indiana Conservation Officers went to the Jackson Boat Ramp after a caller reported that Phillips had dove into the water from a floating dock while swimming with friends and didn't resurface.
A diver located him in nearly 15 feet of water, within minutes of his first dive.
An autopsy performed Saturday morning determined Phillips drowned.
Assisting agencies at the scene included the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, Patoka Reservoir personnel, IU Health Ambulance Service, Orange County Rural District 1 Fire Department, and the Orange County Coroner's Office.
Phillips was not wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident. Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage wearing a lifejacket when recreating on or around bodies of water.
