(LOOGOOTEE) - Loogootee residents could face a potential insurance rate because of a new fire rating.
Insurance Services Office, a national non-governmental agency, determines the fire rate for many cities and towns across the country, based on a scale ranging from 10 to 1. The lower the number, the better the fire insurance rate for those living or conducting business in that community.
Mayor Noel Harty says he and Fire Chief Morgan Huebner were notified by ISO that the city's fire rating declined from 6 to 10. Now both officials are concerned citizen and business owners could see an increase in insurance rates.
The agency says the reason for the decline was because certain city fire training records had not been received.
Huebner says the training records were sent by fax to ISO at least six months ago, when they were requested by the firm.
Neither the mayor nor Huebner were notified the records were not received until they received the notice of the rate change.
Huebner contacted ISO, but was told the rate could not be changed until the department completes another survey which can not be conducted until 2016, therefore the rating will remain at 10.
