Relay For Life Raises More Than $33,000 For Cancer Research

Last updated on Monday, June 22, 2015

(BEDFORD) - Relay For Life kicked off their event at 4 p.m. at the Parkview Intermediate School track Saturday.

The Relay For Life raised more than $33,000 at the the community-based event where teams and individuals set up campsites along the track and took turns walking or running around the track. Each team had at least one participant on the track at all times.

The funds raised support groundbreaking cancer research, education and prevention programs, and critical services for people facing cancer.

Relay For Life participants and donors remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those battling the disease by dedicating luminaria bags. The bags lined the track as dusk fell around 10 p.m.. Each luminaria was personalized with a name, photo, message or drawing in memory or honor of a friend or loved one who has been affected by cancer. The Luminaria Ceremony is a ceremony of remembrance and hope. It is a way to honor survivors and those who have lost the battle to cancer. It is a time to grieve for those we have lost, to reflect on our own or loved ones cancer experience, and to find hope that tomorrow holds the promise of a cancer-free world.

It is thanks to the dedication of Relay teams and sponsors that made the event a success. Super Oldies and Relay for Life would like to thank the following sponsors:
Bedford Sewing Center
The Dog Club
Jumping Jacks Entertainment
American Family Insurance Agent - Michael Long
IU Health Bedford
Oakland City University
Jumping Jacks Entertainment

It is not too late for community members to get involved by making a donation to the Relay For Life of Lawrence County.
