Railroad Construction At Hiawatha Yard

Last updated on Tuesday, June 2, 2015

(JASONVILLE) - Indiana Rail Road contractors began replacing a number of switches at the south end of the railroad’s Hiawatha Yard switching hub on Sunday, and the investments to the south may result in increased wait times for motorists in Jasonville, situated at the north end of the yard.

Under normal circumstances, INRD performs most freight-car switching from the south end of the yard in order to avoid blocking the Grade Road crossings at Shanklin, Locust and Sycamore streets, as well as State Road 48.

During the five-week construction period, however, switching must be performed from the north end of Hiawatha Yard. The work represents part of INRD's $15 million capital investment plan for 2015 to keep the region's freight moving safely and efficiently.

Per Indiana law, trains cannot block public grade crossings for more than 10 minutes at a time, and INRD crews will endeavor to adhere to the law at all times. INRD officials also express their appreciation to the public for their understanding, and encourage citizens to, as always, use caution around the railroad.

The Indianapolis-based Indiana Rail Road Company is a privately-held, 500-mile railroad which hauls the equivalent of more than 800,000 truckloads of consumer, industrial and energy products each year.

INRD is active in the community, operating the popular Santa Train, serving as a major sponsor of "Jingle Rails" at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, and the Indiana Historical Society's Indiana Bicentennial Train, and providing education and public safety-related community grants.
