(BLOOMINGTON) - Renovations have been stopped at an Indiana University Franklin Hall after workers find asbestos.
The Indiana Department of Labor received an anonymous complaint from a worker on the job about the problem. The organization is waiting for a formal complaint before it opens an investigation, but it has not yet received the necessary paperwork.
The building first opened in 1907 and is undergoing a $21 million renovation to become the home of The College of Arts and Sciences' Media School.
IU Spokesman Mark Land says workers were removing windows on July 15 when they discovered more asbestos than they anticipated.
"Once the asbestos was detected, we decided to test the entire construction area and on an abundance of caution, we decided we're not going to have any work done until we can get the test results and figure out a plan to abate the asbestos," Land says.
The renovation is set for completion in August of 2016. It is not yet clear if the halt in construction will alter that schedule.
