(LINTON) - 17-year-old Carson Gillespie just completed his final project before being designated an Eagle Scout. Gillespie has been in the Boy Scouts of America since the third grade.
Carson Gillespie is the son of Shelly and Tim Gillespie. Grandson of Herman and Joyce Gillespie, Kay Beck, and Carolyn Beck.
For his final project, he chose the site of Linton Community Pool.
The weeks before the Linton Freedom Festival, Gillespie along with the help of family, friends and fellow scouts, (a total of 12 people) worked at the Linton Community Pool.
For a couple of weeks Gillespie and his helpers painted graphics on the front of the building, re-mulched the front landscape near the monument, and replaced the front fence located on the west side of the building.
"The front fence was really loose, and unsecured. Part of my responsibilities for this project is to around and gather donations. Jeff Waters provided the paint and painting for the front of the building. Abel's Nursery gave me a great discount for the mulch, Bender's Lumber and Black Lumber also gave me a discount for the wood. The rest of the money was spent out of pocket," Gillespie told the Greene County Daily World.
Gathering the donations and materials is only the first step of the project, the rest is the labor. During the heat of the summer Gillespie and his volunteers spent many days working outside.
Gillespie and his volunteers put over 80 hours of their own time in this project.
"I am very grateful for all the help I have received on this project. I want to thank my mother, Shelly, my brother Parker and my sister Jayden for all of their support. I also want to thank my fellow troop mates, Kelly Huffman my scout master, Mike Pate, and Jeff and Lori Waters. Everyone has been great and have helped me along the way."
After graduating high school Gillespie plans on pursuing a career in computer engineering at Purdue University.
