(BEDFORD) - Rain forced the cancellation of the annual Get Outdoors Day in June, but the Hoosier National Forest is offering families an alternative to get outdoors and explore.
"To make it fun, we've created a challenge with 15 sites for families to visit," says Forest Supervisor Mike Chaveas. "Each site has a clue, so kids can find the answers and get rewarded for completing the challenge."
The challenge list can be found at http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/hoosier/home/?cid=STELPRD3845785
Chaveas said the Hoosier National Forest worked with Spring Mill State Park, Lawrence County Tourism and the Bedford Park Department to come up with a list of local sites.
A variety of prizes are available for any child who completes 10 of the 15 sites in the challenge before September 15. Children may have their choice of prizes.
Most sites are free, though Spring Mill State Park and Hardin Ridge Recreation Area do charge a gate fee. Information on the sites is available on the Hoosier website at www.fs.usda.gov/hoosier.
The Hoosier National Forest would also like to see your photos as you are out enjoying the Challenge. If you wish, you may send them to @HoosierNF or post them on our Facebook page. Use the hashtag #GOHoosierNF.
When you complete the Challenge, bring you answer sheet to the Hoosier National Forest office at 811 Constitution Avenue, Bedford, IN, between 8 a.m. and 4:20 p.m. Monday through Friday, to collect your prize. Prizes were donated by Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Hoosier National Forest.
For more information on the Challenge or to pick up a list of sites contact the Hoosier National Forest at (812) 275-5987.
