(BEDFORD) - With a new school year approaching quickly, the Oolitic Town Council has concerns about traffic congestion around Dollens School.
Oolitic Town Council member Bill Kendall brought those concerns to the attention of the Bedford North Lawrence School Board.
"This has been a problem for some time," Kendall says. "Every year we have many complaints about the traffic situation around Dollens School. People will park right in the middle of the highway to pick up their children."
Kendall and other Oolitic officials are concerned about student and motorist safety.
"This has been a problem for years," says Oolitic Town Council member Charlie Luther, who was glad Kendall addressed the school board. "Something has to be done before someone is killed or gets hurt."
Board members told Kendall they will continue to look into the issue, but so far have not come up with a solution.
In the past, Oolitic police have attempted to address the problem, but with such a small force it is an impossible task.
Kendall requested the school board to ask the Sheriff's Department to address the issue.
"If they could post an officer there during the times when parents are picking up and dropping off students I believe it would help," Kendall says.
During the school board meeting, Superintendent Gary Conner said he would contact Sheriff Mike Branham to address the issue.
