(WASHINGTON) - Washington City departments each requested a 5 percent wage increase during a wage and benefit discussion during the Washington City Council meeting.
The electric and police departments each had representatives explain what each department would like to see in 2016.
Case Cummings, representing the police department, asked for a 5 percent increase in wages to help boost morale. Many of the officers are working another part-time job to help support their families. The raise would also make the department more competitive with other departments preventing turnover. He also requested to raise the cap on comp-time from 40 to 80 hours and a cell phone stipend of $40 a month, saying use of cell phones has been a successful tool for the department.
The electric department, represented by Dustin Smith asked for $150 in standby pay for the department in addition to the cell phone stipend and raises. Smith says in his 10 years with the department, the standby pay, which is currently at $75, had never increased. Employees would like to see an additional vacation day added to those with longevity in the department.
