(MITCHELL) - The body of a Mitchell man was found at an accident site on Meridian Road on Sunday.
Just after 6 p.m., Lawrence County Police received a call about a human skull found along with a motorcycle in a wooded area in the 2900 block of Meridian Road.
According to Sheriff Mike Branham, a man taking a walk in the area located the skull and accident site.
Police believe the accident happened on July 23, but no one had discovered the accident site or reported the accident.
Officers found the body of 57-year-old Dennis Palmer under his 2004 Harley Davidson.
"Mr. Palmer was on his way to the 4-H fair when the accident happened," Branham says. "And no one had reported him missing. His nearest relative, a sister, lived in California."
Branham says Palmer was traveling on Meridian Road about 3/4 of a mile south of Yockey Road when he entered the curve and lost control of the motorcycle.
"There were 17.4 feet of skid marks on the pavement," Branham added. "The motorcycle left the roadway and entered a wooded area. He was found with the motorcycle on top of him."
Branham says Palmer was not wearing a helmet and suffered fatal injuries at the time of the crash.
"We will know more after the autopsy today," Branham says. "But it appears his injuries would have killed him instantly."
Shawswick and Marion Volunteer Fire Departments assisted at the scene.
