(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Urban Enterprise Association is looking into the use of several properties they own last week during a meeting at City Hall.
BUEA owns approximately 2.5 acres at 5th and H streets and the property has been for sale for several years with no interest. Now a group of gardeners would like to use part of the area if approved by the board.
The Times-Mail reports that officials must also determine what to do with the former CSX Monon Depot. The Lawrence County Solid Waste District was renting the depot, but is in the process of moving their operations to Elliott Stone Co.'s former facilities on Mitchell Road.
Officials would like to save the depot, but a Phase 1 inspection revealed contamination to a small portion of the property, which city officials have corrected. Officials say further testing will need to be done to make sure there were no other environmental concerns before officials could make a decision if the building could be saved or if it would have to be torn down.
Another concern is that the roof of the depot needs to be replace and officials say that would cost around $200,000 and would be cost prohibited, unless they could find grants or someone with sufficient funds who would undertake the restoration project.
Another building that has a leaky roof is the Elks Lodge on 15th Street, which was recently acquired by the BUEA. The future of that facility has yet to be determined, but the board expressed an interest in preserving the historic structure.
