(BEDFORD) - Director of Community Corrections Chad Shew asked the Lawrence County Commissioners permission to seek $224,000 in grants to help finance the department’s programs.
Shew told the commissioners that the community correction program is a valuable asset to the community.
Shew added that the extra funds will be needed because the new criminal code expands to six from the current four levels of felonies and also recommends that most low-level felons serve their time in county jails or community corrections programs. Serious felons will serve at least 75 percent of their sentences, up from 50 percent.
Commissioner Bill Spreen thanked Shew and his staff for the work that crews did at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
"It was a big help," he explained. "It worked out very well. Community corrections is a very valuable asset. They did everything we asked and more without having to ask."
Shew added that they provide between $50,000 to $70,000 a quarter in free labor.
