(CRANE) - U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly had a message for the workers, contractors and communities that support the Crane Naval Weapons Warfare Center. The message was simple: thank you.
The Washington Times Herald reports that Donnelly spoke Thursday to the National Defense Industrial Association at WestGate at Crane Academy and talked about the growing respect Crane is gaining in the Department of Defense.
The senator, who is also the ranking member on the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, says the work at Crane on jamming radio and cell phone signals has been crucial in saving the lives of soldiers during the wars in the Middle East.
He says Crane's work in stopping improvised explosive devices from exploding has saved lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Donnelly called Crane a place that not only provides key elements to the nation's defense, but also economic opportunity for a state and region.
He outlined his recent trip that included a stop in Iraq, where he says he spoke with leaders about the battle to oust the Islamic State regime. He also made stops in South Korea and China to speak with leaders about the threats being posed by North Korea.
Donnelly says right now there is no talk in Washington D.C. of any move toward Base Re-Alignment and Closure. The senator said that Crane's push toward innovation and technology is increasingly distancing the base from any threat of closure.
