(PRINCES LAKES) - A Martinsville couple was arrested Tuesday night in Princes Lakes after Columbus Police Chief Gregg Southers witnessed people moving around inside of an SUV.
When Southers pulled the vehicle over, he found a bleeding woman in the back seat, along with a knife and a large amount of blood. The Chief called for help, handcuffed the driver and another passenger, then began providing medical help to the injured woman.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says that shortly thereafter, one his deputies arrived on the scene. He reported looking inside the vehicle and seeing bolt cutters, a catalytic converter that had been cut off, a vehicle battery, several one-hundred dollar bills strewn about the floorboard, a large amount of blood and knife marks in the front passenger seat.
The deputy spoke with the male passenger, 48-year-old Gary Johnston, who stated that he had gotten into an argument with the woman, 39-year-old Dea Thacket, over him not giving her back her cell phone. Police say Johnston had scratches on his neck and a bruised nose. He told police that Thacket took the knife and stabbed through the passenger seat in an attempt to stab him in the back.
Thacket told police that she had struck Johnson from the back seat. At some point, Johnson had turned around and punched her in the face, causing her to bleed from the mouth and nose. Thacket told the deputy that she then began shaking her head and throwing blood around the vehicle because she was angry. She then grabbed the knife and tried to stab Johnston through the car seat. Police say the knife failed to penetrate Johnston's skin.
Both Thacket and Johnston told authorities that they loved one another and intended to get married. They also noted that they didn't want to get the other person in trouble.
While Thacket was being prepared for transport to jail, a female deputy asked her if she had anything illegal and that is when Thacket allegedly produced a clear plastic bag containing meth. She told police she didn't know what was in the baggie and that she had picked it up off the floorboard of the truck and tried to hide it as the vehicle was being pulled over. Thacket told deputies that she didn't know who the meth belonged to.
Johnston and Thacket were both booked in the Johnson County Jail on charges of domestic battery and Thacket is facing a charge of possession of meth.
