Attempted Murder Suspect Captured In Hymera

Last updated on Monday, August 3, 2015

(HYMERA) - An attempted murder suspect was captured in Hymera early Sunday.

Police say 27-year-old Gregory Bruce Grider of Muncie was arrested after he fled Delaware County to Sullivan County. He is accused of being involved in a fatal shooting in Muncie Sunday morning.

Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom was alerted that Grinder could be headed to the Hymera.

Officers from the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department and the Jasonville Police Department set up surveillance on a home at 308 Hickory Street in Hymera.

While waiting for the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, Grinder's Buick pulled into the driveway. There, officers initiated a felony traffic stop.

Police say three people were in the vehicle. They included Grider, an elderly female driver and a middle-aged female passenger in the back seat. The two females exited the vehicle and were safely removed. One of the women was reported to be Grider's grandmother and the other is Grider's girlfriend.

The officers gave verbal commands for Grider to show his hands and get out of the vehicle, but he refused.

According to the sheriff, Grider then slid into the driver's seat, put the car in reverse and rammed the Jasonville Police Department's vehicle. He then allegedly pulled forward to ram it a second time.

At that point, the Sullivan County deputy fired one round from his .40 caliber service weapon into the right rear window area of the Buick.

Grider allegedly then took off in the vehicle, traveling south, but soon crashed the vehicle into a ditch at the intersection of Hickory and Depot streets in Hymera.

Grider then got out and fled on foot, running east. He was quickly apprehended near the front porch of the 308 Hickory Street residence.

In addition to being a suspect in the homicide, Grider was wanted on other charges in Delaware County including strangulation, battery in front of a child, interference with the reporting of a crime and another battery.

According to Sheriff Cottom, these charges were not related to the shooting in Muncie.

The sheriff reported no injuries during the incident in Hymera.

"As is our routine policy, we have asked the Indiana State Police to conduct a thorough investigation into today's (Sunday's) events," Cottom said.

The Indiana State Police began their investigation around noon on Sunday when they received the request from Sheriff Cottom to investigate a police action shooting by one of his deputies.

According to a press release by the ISP Putnamville Post, the names of the officers involved on the scene will be released at or near the end of the investigation which could take a week or two.

Once the ISP investigation is complete, a report will be submitted to the Sullivan County Prosecutor's Office for review.

The ISP release states the investigation is ongoing and no other information will be released until the investigation is concluded.

Charges against Grider in Sullivan County are pending, but he is being held without bond in connection with the warrants issued in the previous case in Delaware County.
