(BLOOMFIELD) - Soon, a new one megawatt solar site will harvest the power of the sun along I-69 on the Greene and Daviess county borders.
The photovoltaic solar array, located on 14.5 acres in Taylor Township off County Road 25 West just south of Bloomfield, is part of a larger effort by power supplier Hoosier Energy to explore how solar will benefit the overall power supply portfolio.
Construction of the highly visible array began in early July and is expected to be completed in 90 days. Once connected to the grid, the solar farm is capable of producing enough electricity for about 1,000 homes and businesses served by the Utilities District of Western Indiana and Daviess-Martin REMCs.
The solar farm is one of 10 Hoosier Energy plans to install throughout southern and central Indiana and southeastern Illinois. The sites represent an opportunity for UDWI and Daviess-Martin to obtain information on how the latest solar technology can provide electricity for member consumers.
Project organizers hope to learn how this variable energy resource integrates onto the grid and how solar might offset the need for other energy resources during periods of high demand.
Once collected, this information will help your local REMC give advice to customers on the operational issues, costs and benefits of solar as a renewable energy resource.
