(ORLEANS) - Orleans “200 Days of Celebration” continues on Friday with the Opening of 1965 Time Capsule in historic Congress Square.
Orleans Bicentennial Committee Chairman Robert Henderson says that the much anticipated Opening of the 1965 Time Capsule is set for Friday at 6 p.m., 50 years to the date that the capsule was sealed and buried as the closing out event of the town's 150th Birthday Celebration, which was observed in August 1965.
There will be a brief ceremony with the Time Capsule items to be displayed immediately after the opening.
Committee members are also planning a Fish Fry in the Park that evening as well and a free Concert in the Park with "Tobin & Friends," starting at 7 p.m. Attendees are encourage to bring their lawn chairs.
The committee is also planning for the placement of a new 2015 Time Capsule before year's end to be opened in 2065.
During a meeting of the Bicentennial Committee last week, the group briefly reviewed both the recent Bicentennial Homecoming and Civil War events which were deemed as being very successful.
Members of the Orleans American Legion Post #69 were on hand to present the committee with remaining monies from their fundraising efforts undertaken to assist with the Homecoming weekend fireworks display. Henderson and members of the committee expressed their appreciation to the Legion and all of its members for going "above and beyond" in their support for the Orleans Bicentennial Celebration.
Committee members noted that a limited number of Orleans Bicentennial souvenirs are still available and available for purchase from the Orleans town offices. Henderson said the sales of some of the keepsakes are going quite strong with a number of mail orders being processed weekly as well. Committee members will also be setting up a booth at the upcoming Time Capsule event on the 14th and selling a number of remaining Orleans 200 type items.
Looking head the Centennial Celebration of the historic 1915 Orleans Public Library will be observed during the month of September with a special gala event planned for September 11th. October will bring "Stories behind the Stones," a living history event to be staged at the historic town cemeteries. Fall Fun Fest in the Park will take place on October 10th.
The holiday season will be ushered in with "Christmas on the Square" in mid-December concluding the yearlong birthday celebration.
