Bedford Man Injured After Crash On Sand Pit Road

Last updated on Thursday, September 10, 2015

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was injured after he lost control of his vehicle on Sand Pit Road early Wednesday morning.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 28-year-old Joshua Burley of Bedford was traveling eastbound on Sand Pit Road when for an unknown reason his 2013 Jeep Wrangler went of the south side of the road, traveled 290 feet in tall grass and then collided with a Duke Energy utility pole, breaking it in half. The Jeep then flipped onto its side.

Live power lines were down on top of the Jeep, trapping Burley inside.

Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department, Bedford Fire Department extrication and a Seals ambulance crew had to wait until Duke Energy arrived before they could free Burley from the Jeep because of those live utility lines.

Burley, who suffered numerous injuries, was taken to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital and then flown by Air Evac medical helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment.

Emergency crews reported Burley did have the odor of alcohol on his breath, however the officer noted in his report that he could not substantiate if Burley had been drinking.
