Elk Creek Bridge Repairs Resume On Sunday

Last updated on Friday, September 25, 2015

(WASHINGTON CO.) - The Indiana Department of Transportation is on schedule to close the State Road 56 bridge over Elk Creek two miles west of S.R. 39 next week - weather permitting - for a polymeric bridge deck overlay.

INDOT officials expect this closure will begin Sunday morning and be lifted within two to three days, unless inclement weather causes a postponement.

Motorists will be detoured around the bridge closure via Interstate 65 and State Road 60.

State Road 56's 3-span concrete girder bridge closed in mid-August for full-depth concrete repairs. It reopened to traffic prior to Labor Day.

Since that time, the concrete patches have cured, allowing Phase II of the preservation project: the application of a 3/8-inch polymeric deck overlay applied in two lifts to seal the structure from hazardous weather and restore a high level of surface friction for skid resistance, as a measure to reduce hydroplaning.

State Road 56 traffic count at Elk Creek is 4,070 vehicles per day.
