(SALEM) - A Salem man was arrested after he allegedly broke into a home, battered and sexually assaulted a 12-year old-boy. The crime happened 15 years ago on October 26, 1999.
Police arrested 42-year-old Eric S. Jones, after police were able to link him to the crime.
According to police, the boy had come home to what he believed was an empty home. But when he entered Jones allegedly brutally attacked the boy, battering him and sexually assaulting him.
When Jones heard someone enter the home he fled on foot.
At the time of the crime no one knew who Jones was.
Investigators from the Indiana State Police investigated the crime, but were unable to find who had assaulted the young boy.
Then on July 24, ISP Detective Bill Wibbles began investigating this "cold case."
Evidence gathered at the scene was tested for DNA. Those test results linked Jones to the crime. Police then requested an arrest warrant charging Jones with a Class A felony of child molesting. Police found Jones in the Scott County Jail where he is being held on an unrelated charge.
Assisting agencies in the investigation are the Washington County Prosecutor, Washington County Sheriff's Department and the Salem Police Department.
