(EAST OOLITIC) - Basketball legend Danny Bush and his wife Carol were honored at a breakfast at the East Oolitic Community Center on Denson Street Saturday.
According to Tug Beal, one of the organizers for the event, people from as far as Indianapolis attended the event. Beal says more than 100 people the breakfast.
"We had a full house. There were a lot of former players, friends and family that attended," Beal says. "Danny was one of the best basketball players out of Oolitic. He coached when Damon (Bailey) was playing and took the team to a state championship."
But Bush was more than a fantastic player and coach, Beal added.
"He and his wife Carol have done a lot for this community," Beal says. "They were school sweethearts. They are like the Kennedy's the Camelot couple of Oolitic."
Bush coached Bedford North Lawrence High School Stars from 1981 until 1993.
"He had more than 21 years in the field of coaching," Bush says. "This event was wonderful. I am honored to be a part of it. My wife and I were able to visit with a lot of people and reminisce."
Bush has a 266-70 coaching record with 5 HHC Championships, 8 sectional wins, 4 Regional and 3 Semi-State Championships. He took the BNL Stars to a State Championship in 1990.
He was named Indiana All-State Coach in 1990 and was elected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
Bush played for Oolitic High School in 1968 and attended and played for Indiana State University in 1972.
Beal also praised the Lawrence County Community Correction Road Crew for helping prepare, serve and clean up after the breakfast.
"They were fantastic," Beal added. "Tony (Pulliam) and the crew were a blessing. They do a lot of good around here not only helping today but helping our community do upkeep at the community center."
