(SPRINGVILLE) - A fire destroyed a home at 379 Spencer Pike Road early Sunday morning.
A smoke alarm woke Ronnie and Phyllis Thompson just after midnight.
Perry Volunteer Fire Department Chief Max Peters says intense winds accelerated the fire at 379 Spencer Pike, causing it to spread quickly.
Firefighters from Perry, Marshall and Indian Creek responded to the blaze.
"It blew the fire across the road catching trees on fire," Peters added. "There was nothing we could do when we got there."
The fire began in a mudroom at the back of the home where an electric space heater ignited some curtains.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the house saving the family's large barn and the show horses inside.
A trailer used to transport the horses was saved also, but did have some minor damage.
Firefighters were also able to save the family's cat and kittens.
Firefighters from Perry VFD stayed until 5:21 a.m.
