According to police Overholtz was sighting in his Mossberg 20-gauge shotgun at his home Saturday afternoon when he fired the gun, and the barrel of the shotgun blew out, causing damage to his left hand.
Police say it has not been determined why he barrel was compromised.
Conservation Officer Kendrick Fuhrman did rule out no obstruction was in the barrel and Overholtz was not using the wrong size shells, both common reasons for guns to malfunction.
