(NEWBERRY) - As work at the site of the new bridge over White River at Newberry continues, the Indiana Department of Transportation is now allowing two-lane traffic to flow over the bridge.
INDOT contractors reopened State Road 57 to two lanes over the bridge on Friday.
Since 2010, traffic signals have been in place on each end of the bridge. The signals allowed only one direction of traffic to cross at a time due to structural concerns.
In 2013, INDOT awarded an $11.3 million construction contract to replace the aging steel-truss bridge that was built in 1940.
Later, the contractor, Ragle Inc. of Newburgh, shifted traffic to a temporary runaround in order to bypass the old bridge.
