(MITCHELL) - Two people were arrested on meth charges after officers found 0.8 grams of crystal meth.
According to Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham, Officer Andy Blackburn stopped a green Nissan at Lehigh Field in Mitchell after seeing the passenger in the car not wearing a seatbelt.
After stopping the car, police discovered the car plate was registered for a maroon Pontiac and that the driver, 46-year-old Franklin Banks of Bedford, was driving on a suspended driver's license.
While officers were conducting the traffic stop, Capt. Andrew Phillips and his canine partner Neko arrived and alerted officers to possible drugs in the car.
Officers obtained permission to search the car and found a glass smoking device and a cellophane wrapper containing a white crystal substance weighing 0.8 grams that field tested positive for meth.
"Neither occupant admitted to ownership of the glass smoking device or the white crystal substance," Branham says. "But both admitted to smoking methamphetamine from the glass smoking device previously."
The driver, Franklin Banks, was arrested on a felony charge of possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, and maintaining a common nuisance. He was also issued citations for driving while suspended, false fictitious registration, and a seat belt violation.
His passenger, 34-year-old Heather Sullivan of Mitchell, was arrested on a felony charge of possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, and visiting a common nuisance. She was also issued a citation for a seat belt violation.
