(NASHVILLE) - Brown County will be getting bridges for the Salt Creek Trail.
The Brazil Times reports that the Clay County Commissioners unanimously voted to reverse their earlier decision to take responsibility for maintaining the bridges.
The historic iron truss bridges are still part of State Road 46 over the Eel River in Clay County, but INDOT plans to build a modern concrete bridge on the road instead and needed to move the two spans.
Because they're historic and of "select" status, INDOT is required to find a new home for them and pay to move and refurbish them to hold up to their new use. But a local entity had to sign an agreement with INDOT to care for the bridge for at least 25 years.
The Brazil Times reported that the Clay County Council wouldn't authorize money to maintain the bridges.
The Brown County Commissioners had offered their support. Terms of that agreement weren't immediately available.
The plan is to place the two spans in different places over the pedestrian Salt Creek Trail. Only a three-quarter-mile length of the trail is open now, but it will connect the state park with downtown Nashville when completed.
Delivery of the bridges was one of the holdups in construction; another is acquisition of land for Phase 3, which will connect Brown County Schools' Eagle Park with the YMCA trailhead.
