(BEDFORD) - Bedford Fire Department firefighters were called to an apartment fire at 2717 R Street just after 10 p.m. Sunday night.
Bedford Police officers were the first to arrive.
Major Danny Irwin says when they arrived that the occupant of apartment 2 where the fire was located had exited the apartment, but then ran back inside.
"He got about three to four feet inside before I was able to pull him out," Irwin wrote in a text message. "Officers also evacuated all the surrounding apartments as firefighters arrived on the scene."
According to Battalion Chief John Dixon, the fire was contained to the one apartment.
"The fire was in the bathroom and contained to that area," Dixon says.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly, but there was smoke damage to the apartment.
"There is only minor fire damage to the bathroom area," he added.
After the fire was out, firefighters checked the apartment and surrounding apartments to make sure the fire had not spread.
"Firefighters did a complete overhaul of the building to make sure the fire had not spread into hidden spaces," Dixon added.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire Inspector Brent Allen will return to the scene this morning to determine a cause.
Dixon says all the surrounding apartment tenants were able to return to their apartments.
