(BEDFORD) - From a visual standpoint the damage done to the south entrance of the Lawrence County Courthouse doesn’t look that bad, but according to Commissioner Chris May, looks are deceiving.
Last Friday, police arrested 58-year-old Terry Luttrell after he rammed his truck into the front of the courthouse and destroyed the south entrance. He told police that he was upset because of something he had learned from the Lawrence County Department of Veteran's Affairs.
"From a visual standpoint, it doesn't look that bad," May said Tuesday during the commissioner's meeting. "But from a contractor's perspective, it's going to be rather costly."
May said contractors and insurance adjusters were at the courthouse Monday to assess the damage.
"We need to get with the insurance adjuster and distinguish whose insurance will be liable for what," he added. "We'll try to get some costs associated with the repairs."
But fixing the damage will be costly and not done quickly.
"We're kind of in a wait-and-see mode," May added. "We're looking at getting the doors replaced as soon as possible."
The doors are custom made, so officials are looking at 6 to 8 weeks or more for delivery.
"We're going to try to expedite that because that's our entrance with the keyless fob (where employees enter the courthouse).
The hand-carved limestone on each side of the door was also damaged.
"Even though it was just a small section on each side of the entry that was damaged, this is not a small problem," May added.
Another problem is contractors will have to use a crane to make repairs and with the newly renovations to the courthouse grounds that is a concern for commissioners.
