(BEDFORD) - Drivers will see change when exiting James Avenue to 16th Street when construction is finished to extend Plaza Drive to meet with Ind. 37.
The new street will head south from the current end of Plaza Drive South and then turn west to Ind. 37.
According to Street Department Supervisor Dan Kirk, the Indiana Department of Transportation engineers have mandated a concrete median be built on James Avenue near Golden Corral, east to Plaza Drive South at McDonald's.
This will prevent drivers from making left turns onto 16th Street when leaving James Avenue.
Drivers on 16th Street will be able to turn left onto James Avenue.
INDOT says the change will make the area safer. Kirk says numerous accidents have occurred in that area when motorists attempt to turn left crossing oncoming traffic.
Crider & Crider is contracted to do the work for $3,248,459. INDOT is paying 80 percent of the bill with the city paying 20 percent.
