(SULLIVAN) - A Linton woman is in jail in Sullivan County after allegedly deceiving two charitable organizations.
Indiana State Police arrested 23-year-old Laken Rochelle Lewis on Wednesday morning after the mother of two reported to have used false information to obtain items from the Christmas For Kids in Sullivan County and the Sons of Honor charities.
The organizations contacted the Indiana State Police at the Putnamville District, requesting an investigation.
According to police Lewis told organization officials that she was helping a family dealing with cancer, who were in need of Christmas gifts for young children.
Both organizations offered their help with toys, groceries, household items and quilts in the days leading up to December 15. Soon thereafter the organizations became suspicious.
Police determined that the children for whom she obtained the gifts were actually her own children.
Lewis is facing a preliminary charge of deception, a Class A misdemeanor. No additional arrests are expected in this case.
The case was investigated by ISP Detective First Sergeant Jason Fajt. Assisting were Sullivan County Prosecutor John Springer.
